Deer Herd Management

The goal of any deer hunter is to have equality deer herd that routinely produces trophy bucks. In order for trophy deer to exist and be hunted, with deer herd as a whole must be properly managed. Implementing a herd management program with a basic foundation of harvesting the right deer can have dramatic long-term effects on the quality of the herd. Game management practices can be as simple or as extensive as desired but these productive practices boil down to one thing... shooting the right deer while protecting the others. Harvesting and protecting deer appropriately enhances the quality of buck both in the near term and long. Patience pays off in deer herd management.

Deer Herd Size and Buck To Doe Ratio

The buck to doe ratio is an extremely important aspect to overall deer herd management. The buck to doe ratio is somewhat of a source of controversy among experts in the field of deer population and herd management. Ideally, the entire herd needs to be of a population size where overgrazing and over foraging does not occur. So before a buck to doe ratio should be a concern, the size of the entire deer herd should be assessed to ensure the land and range is of ample size to support the deer population, also known as carrying capacity. In other words, there needs to be plenty of food to support deer living on the property. When be available natural food supply on the range is depleted quickly due to overgrazing, the size of the whole deer herd may need to be reduced to bring a healthy balance between food and deer back to the range. This is generally accomplished through a combination of harvesting more deer and providing more food.

Once the herd population is being managed, the buck to doe ratio management process can begin. As mentioned above, the ideal buck to doe ratio is a source of strong opinion among leading experts. It is proven that an overabundance of does in relation to the number of bucks can lead to the probability of an overpopulation issue. Therefore, keeping the number of does it check is one of the best ways to manage both the deer population as well as the buck to doe ratio. Determining the buck to doe ratio can be accomplished through conducting surveys either by air (helicopter) or by ground in a vehicle. Certain deer leases have a game biologist work with the landowner and the hunters on the deer lease. The biologist will determine how many bucks need to be harvested as well as how many does need to be harvested in a given season. The population and buck to doe ratio need to be assessed each year prior to the hunting season to ensure the proper number of deer (bucks and does) are harvested.
